A pre-war North West Frontier Mohmand Operations and Great War Western Front group awarded to Private J. Pullan, 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who was present during the Mohmand operations on the North West Frontier which lasted from 13th February to 31st May 1908. Having been recalled from the Reserve he would serve on the Western Front from 9th November 1914 being discharged on 9th March 1917 having suffered from Malaria.

John William Pullan was born in Hanslet, Leeds and giving his trade as a labourer attested at Scunthorpe on 27th December 1900. He would initially serve at home until he travelled to the West Indies on 30th April 1902, he would only remain there until 22nd July 1902, when he would move to Africa, until on 12th December 1903 he would arrive in Mauritius.
A transfer to India on 9th February 1906 would follow, and he would remain there until 3rd December 1908 being present during the Mohmand operations on the North West Frontier which lasted from 14th February to 31st May 1908. He would return home on 4th December 1908 being transferred to the reserve on 26th December 1908.
Recalled for the Great War, he would serve on the Western Front from 9th November 1914 until 5th July 1915. He would be finally discharged on 9th March 1917, having been suffering from Malaria, presumably picked up during his service in India.
