Arthur Gillingham volunteered in September 1914 and would see service as a Private (No. 13997) with the 14th (Service) Battalion (1st Portsmouth), Hampshire Regiment. The National Roll of the Great War notes that he was engaged in important duties with his unit until February 1916, when he was sent to France and took part in numerous engagements. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is now buried in Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel.
