A pair of Royal British Bowmen medals awarded to Joseph Venables Lovett J.P., who was High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1847 and formerly Mayor of Oswestry - the first a silver gilt award dated 1838, the second a silver award dated 1841.
Each medal depicting on the front a trophy of archery tackle including a target, quiver, and hat, above a ribbon inscribed 'Ferat qui Ferit', encircled by the text 'Royal British Bowmen', the rear with central crown encircled by the text 'Dieu et mon droit' and a wreath, the silver-gilt award inscribed ‘J. V. Lovatt’ and dated 1838, the silver award inscribed ‘J. Venables Lovett’, and dated 1841. The earlier award suspended from a plain green ribbon.
Condition: The second with correction to surname to read Lovett, the first named Lovatt, Very Fine.
Joseph Venables Lovettof Belmont near Oswestry was born on 1 Aug 1787 and rose to become Town Mayor of Oswestry for 1820 & High Sheriff of Shropshire for 1847. He died on 15 Jan 1866 at the age of 78 in Belmont Hall, near Oswestry, Shropshire and was buried in Whittington.
