Richard Carroll saw service as a Lance Corporal (No. MX-77) with the Middlesex Regiment on the Western Front on 31st May 1915 and subsequently as a Serjeant (No. 592737, later No. 5528) with the 18th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment – London Irish Rifles.
He would be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 14th May 1919, which confirms him as a native of Gorsepool. This gazette covers awards won in August, September and October 1918.
