A Great War Third Battle of Ypres Military Medal pair awarded to Second Corporal W.H. Parfitt, 92nd South African Broad Guage Operating Company, South Africa Engineers and South Africa Railways Overseas Dominion Section who was awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 12th December 1917 which covers actions at Ypres in September and October 1917. He would later be accidentally injured on 23rd November 1917 spending a period of time recuperating in the UK before returning to the front in August 1918 and seeing the end of the war in France.

W.H. Parfitt was born in Monmouthshire, South Wales in 1879 and enlisted on 15th November 1916 giving his trade as Railway Guard. He would travel to Europe aboard the SS ‘Barambah’ on 27th January 1917 arriving in France on 18th March 1917 seeing service with the 92nd South Africa Broad Guage Operating Company, South Africa Engineers, and would be . accidentally injured on duty on 23rd November 1917. Before being awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 12th December 1917, this Gazette covering actions at Ypres during September and October 1917. At some point he also served with the South African Railways Overseas Dominion Section.
After his injury he would return to the UK for recuperation and was stationed at the No.3 Canadian General Hospital. Later returning to France on 30th July 1918 and rejoined his unit on 10th August 1918. He would eventually return to Cape Town on 5th October 1919 and was discharged on 4th November 1919.
