A Great War Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal group awarded to Private A.J. Hiscocks, Royal Marine Light Infantry who later saw service as an Acting Leading Stoker with H.M.S. Resolution as a member of the Royal Navy. His Great War service would see him take part in the Dardanelles campaign aboard H.M.S. Prince George, as well as serving as part of the Grand Fleet with H.M.S. Orion from November 1916 until the end of the war. He would be awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 16th July 1923

Alfred James Hiscocks was born in Ringwood, Hampshire on 25th June 1890 and joined the Recruiting Depot of the Royal Marines at Deal on 2nd June 1908, being transferred to Plymouth Division on 13th May 1909, before joining Tamar on 1st February 1910, Hawke 20th March 1912 and then returning back to Plymouth Division from 21st May to 13th September 1912.
He would then be posted to Prince George where he served from 14th September 1912 until 16th February 1916.
Upon the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, Prince George returned to full commission on 8 August, and briefly was the squadron's first flagship, until relieved in this role by the battleship Vengeance on 15 August. On 25 August, Prince George covered the passage of the Plymouth Marine Division to Ostend, Belgium, and in September she covered the movement of the British Expeditionary Force from England to France. Prince George's Channel Fleet service ended in February 1915 when she transferred to the Dardanelles for service in the Dardanelles campaign as a "mine-bumper". She arrived at Tenedos on 1 March 1915, which would be her base until February 1916. He would then serve with Europa until 12th April 1916. He would serve with Vivid from 16th September to 1st November 1916, and would then serve aboard Orion from 18th November 1916 until 13th March 1919.
On 14th March 1919 Hiscocks would join the Royal Navy and was issued a new service number (K.56514), whilst still serving aboard H.M.S. Orion. Periods aboard Blake and Blenheim would follow in 1921, before he joined the Resolution on 6th Jan 1923, being awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 16th July 1923. He would transfer from Resolution to Vivid on 30th December 1923, and then Tamar on 20th June 1926, and was still serving in 1929.
