A good Second World War Fall of Singapore Prisoner of War Army Long Service and Good Conduct and Meritorious Service Medal group awarded to Staff Sergeant J.P. Melly, Royal Engineers, later Constable, United Kingdom Police who was present at the Fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942 being taken Prisoner of War and subsequently being held at Changi Prison, Singapore for the duration of the war. He would later serve with the Police in civilian life.

John Patrick Melly was born on 19th March 1904 and was a resident of Plymouth. He saw service as a Sergeant and Staff Sergeant (No. 726572) with the Royal Engineers. He would be awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in Army Order 218 of 1939. Serving in the Pacific theatre in the Second World War he would be present at the fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942 being taken prisoner of war by the Japanese and held at Changi Prison in the city until his release on 15th August 1945. He would go on to receive the Meritorious Service Medal and later in civilian life would serve with the Police.
His Second World War medals would be sent to him at 21 Molefield Estate, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
