A good Officer’s Army of India Medal 1799-1826, short-hyphen reverse, 1 Clasp: Ava awarded to Captain J.J. Hammond, 22nd Regiment Madras Native Infantry who was present during the actions in Burma during the Ava Campaign in the First Burmese War of 1824-1826. He is noted in the historical records of the Survey of India on 16th December 1825 being with the survey branch and Madras Troops in Ava.

James John Hammond was born on 4th April 1791 and would be commissioned as an Ensign on 27th June 1806 with the 11th Madras Native Infantry and promoted Lieutenant on 7th April 1810 with the 11th Native Infantry, before being appointed a Captain on 24th May 1821. He would subsequently serve with the 22nd Madras Native Infantry, with whom he would be present in action in Burma during the Ava Campaign in the First Burmese War of 1824 to 1826,
He is noted in the historical records of the Survey of India on 16th December 1825 being with the survey branch and with the Madras Troops in Ava from 1st November 1825, with Crawford to Amherst, and helped in the lay out of the new town.
He would return to England and married Anne, the daughter of Reverend Dawson Warren in Edmonton on 18th January 1836. Later given the rank of Honorary Major on 28th November 1854, he died on 5th September 1878.
