1043 Private Henry Pate is confirmed as having been present with his regiment during the 1842 China campaign. He had been tried and convicted by Courts Martial of Desertion the previous year and served his sentence in Manchester.
The 98th Regiment of Foot had thirteen men killed and only one wounded in action, probably during the final advance on Nanking. Fifty men died of cholera and over two hundred were unfit for service. A move to Hong Kong followed, with over five hundred dying and sick.
