Herbert Piper was born in Tunworth, Hampshire and attested into the Royal Artillery at Basingstoke on 13th February 1893 giving his former trade as Labourer. Initially service at home in the UK until 16th September 1895 when along with his unit he travelled to India being present on active service during the Punjab Frontier operations which lasted from 10th June 1897 to 6th April 1898.
Piper would die of Enteric Fever at Sialkot on 4th August 1898. 1 of 10 casualties the Battery suffered during the campaign. This is his sole medal entitlement.
