A Boer War Transvaal operations and later Great War casualty Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899-1902, 3 Clasps: Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 awarded to Private F. Friend, 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment who saw service during the Boer War on the operations in Transvaal. He would later re-enlist at the outbreak of the Great War seeing service on the Western Front from 12th December 1914 and being accidentally killed on 19th August 1915. He is now buried in Auchonvilliers Military Cemetery.

Frank Edward Friend was born in Peckham, Surrey and would see service as a Private (No. 6082) with the 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment during the Boer War in South Africa where he would take part in the operations in Transvaal. He would later re-enlist at the outbreak of the Great War by which time he was residing in Baskingstoke. Arriving in France on 12th December 1914 he would be entitled to a 1914-1915 Star trio.
Friend was accidentally killed on 19th August 1915 with the rank of Lance Sergeant and is now buried in Auchonvilliers Military Cemetery, he is noted as the son of Richard Sutton Friend and Adeline Friend.
