A Boer War Cape Colony, Relief of Ladysmith and Tugela Heights and Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal pair awarded to Colour Sergeant C.E. Smith, Middlesex Regiment who was present in South Africa during the Boer War and was present during the operations in Cape Colony as well as in the actions at the Tugela Heights from 14th to 27th February 1900, and during the Relief of Ladysmith from 15th December 1899 to 28th February 1900. He would be awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in Army Order 260 of 1906.

Charles Edward Smith was born in Islington, London and attested on 13th April 1888, he would serve at home until he travelled to Gibraltar on 20th September 1892, where he remained until he returned home once more on 1st March 1895. He would then travel to the East Indies on 12th December 1895 until February 1898. A short period at home followed from 13th February 1898 until 1st December 1899 when he would travel to South Africa.
In South Africa he would take part in the Boer War where he would participate in the operations in Cape Colony as well as in the actions at the Tugela Heights from 14th to 27th February 1900, and during the Relief of Ladysmith from 15th December 1899 to 28th February 1900.
He would return home on 16th October 1900 and would remain there until his discharge on 12th February 1909. He was awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in Army Order 260 of 1906.
