A Boer War Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Johannesburg operations and Great War Western Front group awarded to Private C. Baldwin 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, later South Wales Borderers who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in the operations in Cape Colony as well as taking part in the actions at Paardeberg and Johannesburg. After being discharged in 1902, he would re-enlist for the Great War and saw service with the South Wales Borderers on the Western Front from July 1915.

Charles Baldwin was born in 1871 at Winchfield, Odiham, Winchester and attested for the Hampshire Regiment on 15th April 1890. Following service in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in operations in Cape Colony as well as in the actions at Paardeberg and Johannesburg he was discharged at Winchester on 16th September 1902, giving his intended place of residence as 102 Albert Palace Mansions, Battersea.
He attested South Wales Borderers special reserve, 1st September 1915 at Winchester aged 43 giving his trade as a Labourer, and would be posted 5th Battalion, South Wales Borderers. The 5th Battalion, landed at Le Havre as part of the 58th Brigade in the 19th Division in July 1915 and saw service on the Western Front. He served in France until demobilisation in February 1919
