Burns, 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment who having seen serving during the Boer War in South Africa where he would take part in the operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal, would go on to see service on the Western Front from 8th September 1914 and would be taken prisoner of war at Bourgwon 20th September 1914, later being held at Doberitz.

Thomas Burns was born in Keithley on 28th May 1876 and having enlisted, later saw service as a Private (No. 5590) with 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment during the Boer War in South Africa where he would take part in the operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. He would later see service on the Western Front during the Great War, arriving in France on 8th September 1914 and being taken prisoner of war after the fighting at Bourge on 20th September 1914.
