Serjeant Drummer (No. 2654) Alfred Parkinson saw service with 3rd Battalion, Essex Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in the operations in Cape Colony and Transvaal. He would later be awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in the Appendix to Army Order 242 in October 1907.
He had previously been discharged at Warley on 30th June 1907 his conduct being stated as exemplary, and it was noted he was thoroughly sober and reliable having committed no offence during the last 19 ½ years and no incidence of drunkenness in whole service of 33 ½ years
