Leonard Samuel Gardner was living in Honour Oak Park, South East London and served from 7th July 1915 as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, he would serve with the Nelson Battalion from 16th February 1916 initially as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force before he embarked at Mudros on 16th May 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles on 22nd May 1916.
He would be serving with the Nelson Battalion when he was killed in action on 13th November 1916 – the first day of the Battle of the Ancre, subsequently being buried in the Ancre British Cemetery at Beaumont-Hamel. The Nelson Battalion suffering over 350 casualties during the attack.
