Thomas John Fitchett was born in Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Having worked as a collier he enlisted into the British Army at Merthyr on 26th October 1892, and then saw service as a Private (No.4045) T. Fitchett, 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers.
