A 1930s New Zealand Air Force DFC winner’s presentation wristwatch with back inscribed “To ‘Bobby’ love Mum & Dad 1941” worn by Flying Officer Robert George Evans, 692 Pathfinder Squadron who was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross having completed 68 operational sorties over two tours.
Steel cushion form wristwatch with black Arabic numerals. Manually wound movement, lever escapement, 15 jewels. Steel cushion form case with polished finish, fixed bar lugs, snap-on case back and bezel. Dial unsigned.
Condition: Appears to be in working order, keeping good time, rebut not guaranteed. Old leather strap cracked and will need replacing if intended for wear.
Together with the official Government House, Dominion of New Zealand headed notification of the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with a copy of the official citation.
“Flying Officer Evans has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion.”
The recommendation for the award stating:
“On his first tour this officer completed 40 sorties. During his second tour, out of 28 sorties, 13 have been directed against Berlin. He has always proved himself to be a cool and courageous pilot.”
